Cuba Experience 2008

A few weeks ago I along with four men from four different states went to Cuba. The purpose of our trip was to go and see how we could help our churches there following the tropical storms and hurricanes that had recently passed through. Our route would take us through Mexico and then on to Havana. All went well until we arrived at the Havana airport. After we got off the plane and before we went through customs we were stopped. The first thing we were asked was were we with a church. We tried to explain, though we were Christians, we were there just to visit with friends and check on them. They repeatedly asked what church we were with and what church we were going to.

While we had planned on attending church while we were there, that was not the purpose of our trip. We could not convince them of that. We were told we could not enter the country and would be put back on a plane the next morning.

They were true to their word. We were in Cuba a total of eight hours and never got past security at the airport. We slept in the airport, what little sleep we got. We did have the opportunity to talk to and visit with some men and women that worked at the airport. We were able to distribute some of the items we had taken in. While we did not accomplish what we set out to do, I think we accomplished God’s plan. We need to keep in mind; God always knows what is best.
